Basic info

Name

Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier

Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier bottle by Brauerei Heller Bamberg
Country Germany
Bottle size 0.5 l.
Alc vol 4.8 %
Beer Style Rauchbier
Beer name means "Aecht" is a old german word for "Original"."Schlenkerla" is the name of the beer. rauchbeir means smoked beer. the grain in this beer has been smoked before brewing.(Thanks Pia and Markus) Many years ago (I don´t know exactly when it was, probably about 200-300 years)
the landlord of the brewery Heller enjoyed too much of his beer and began to stagger.
And the franconian expression for "stagger" is to do a "Schlenkerla" ("a Schlenkerla machen")
After this incident the landlord got the nickname "Schlenkerla" and he called from this time on his beerafter his nickname.
"Aecht" is franconian dialect for "ein echtes" (a real/an original)--> "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier" --> "Schlenkerla´s original Rauchbier" (Thanks Martin)

Ok, a bit of Finnish beer history.
Ten years ago, 1990, Finland was at clutches of an terrible curse: wine-oriented state alcohol monopoly! This meant that there was only couple of foreing beers available and almost all finnish beers were industrially brewed waters.
Since the rules of Alko, which had both the import and retail sales monopoly (not for bars and restaurants though, thank heavens) stated that if you wanted to import anything else than what they did, you could, but you would have to buy whole set and also pay whatever Alko wanted you to pay.
For this reason no-one bothered to import anything else since it wasnt a business.
Except for reasons of promoting different kinds of beers!
In 1992 a small bar in Oulu, Johanneksen Kellari ordered whole set of this beer from Alko. It costed many times more than other beers in that place, but they sold them all!
This stunned Alko and they took this one to their own shelves as well. And then another "not ordinary" beer. And another. And after couple of years, we had a beer boom with incredible amount of beers available in Finland!!
This phenomenon can also be attributed to this beer, and Johanneksen Kellari (and the excellent restaurant where it is, Franzen).
So if you visit Oulu, dr_op in the Cellar and the corner of the church and have rauchbier, just for the difference it made!

Bourgogne des Flandres
Bourgogne is a type of wine, 'des Flandres' means 'of the Flemish, by the Flemish', so the name means 'Bourgogne like the Flemish people make it'. It's kind of a joke towards the french, who are a bit snobbish concening their wines, wheras the Belgians (Flemings are the belgians that live in the northern part of Belgium, and whose language is Dutch) have a more cheerful attitude towards life (and also brew delicious beers that can compete with the french wines) As for the question you pose, on the translation of the bottle text, it says; 'Registered brand since 1911. A beer from Brugge that has been brewn, traditionally, for seven generations, fermentation on oak casks. Medals won: John Martin Finest Beers se_lection' . John Martins beer is another nice story. I don't know if you have any bottles of this particular brand, but it is a beer that was importes in Belgium, from England, but it's original name; 'Bulldog Ale', didn't sound english enough, according to the importer, so he named it Jonh Martins special ale. So its a British beer, sold under another british name by a Belgian. (Thanks Has)
