Essentially you need to look at the history of the caribbean.Originally, before the conquistadors (columbus and crew) came to the caribbean the islands were populated by caribs and arawaks (two native tribes). The caribs were the warlike tribe and the arawaks were more peace loving. Trinidad had a huge carib population before the mass genocide of the spanish, which wiped out almost all traces of these two tribes. So the name Carib comes from the Carib people, the original people of the island. (Thanks Tarun)
